Miami-Dade County, Florida: The Flamingo Democrats have endorsed State Senator Shevrin Jones for re-election in State Senate District 34 at their monthly meeting held on June 30, 2022. The chapter also endorsed Raquel Pacheco for State Senate District 36, and Janelle Perez for State Senate District 38 at the same meeting.
In State House races, the chapter endorsed Bay Harbor Islands Town Councilman Jordan W. Leonard for State House District 106, Ashley Gantt for State House District 109, A.J. D'Amico for State House District 113, Adam Benna for State House District 114, Christie Cantin Davis for State House District 115, and Gabriel Gonzalez for State House District 119.
The Flamingo Democrats are the Miami-Dade chapter of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus. The Mission of the Flamingo Democrats is to foster goodwill among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Democrats and to promote political activity within our community.
Candidates were invited to fill out a questionnaire about their positions on a number of topics, including the rights of same-sex couples to adopt, anti-bullying measures in schools, the fair and equal access to essential healthcare for transgender persons, support for safe and legal abortion, gun safety legislation, and other Democratic priorities. To receive our endorsement, candidates needed to fill out the questionnaire and receive the ⅔ majority vote of voting caucus members. In this case, all candidates were endorsed unanimously.
All the candidates we endorsed tonight impressed us with their thoughtful answers to our questionnaire, and also with their commitment to LGBTQ+ equality in the state of Florida. They understand that the Florida Legislature should not be a place to bully any Floridians and that our community can not be a political football.
